Kalim - Phuket - Thailand

Kalim beach neighbours lively Patong. It is situated at the northern end of Patong Bay. Kalim is building a reputation for its fabulous villas nestled in the hillside and above the beach and for fine dining experiences. Our Kalim villas refect this with the area being much more serene than Patong, but still near enough to the action.

Kalim Beach is situated at the far northern end of Patong Bay, it is a great location as it is only 5 minutes from the lively action in Patong and 10 minutes from the quieter Kamala beach and 15 minutes to glamorous Surin.  Kalim is approximately 45 minutes from Phuket airport.

Kalim is much quieter and more tranquil than Patong, an escape from the lively crowds, but near enough to get back to the heart of the action if you desire. Kalim is is building a more sophisticated reputation than Patong, with several options for fine dining and the creation of high end villas positioned in the mountains above the beach. A great place to unwind.  

Beaches

Kalim beach
Kalim beach itself is a charming sandy beach, but it does have rocky outcrops. At high tide, beware of the rocks and coral when swimming. At low tide the beach is great for exploring to discover living sea creatures amongst the coral. Remember to wear reef shoes to avoid injury. You should be able to observe sea cucumbers, starfish and other delightful sea life and shells - creating life long memories. Kalim beach is also a surf spot between June and October. From around 4pm there are a number of vendors selling delicious street food, from fried chicken to mango smoothies.

There are a few things to do in Kalim, but it is very quiet and most of the action centres around nearby Patong. Activities in Kalim tend centre around the beach and dining out. It is well located to get to other locations in Phuket - only a short distance from Patong and around 10 minutes from quiet Kamala beach.

Paddling
When the tide is low, if you wear reef shoes you can paddle amongst the coral to discover interesting sea creatures.

Snorkelling
When the tide is high the water is suitable for snorkelling, but beware of the rocks.

Surfing
During the winter months you can rent a surf board. You can rent a board from the Yellow surf shop.

Shopping
There are not any shops in Kalim itself, but there are street vendors mainly selling food and drinks. Patong is just a short distance and it has a wealth of shopping options.

Zorbing
Located in the hills overlooking Kalim beach, this involves rolling down the hill inside a giant plastic ball!

Watersports and Sea Tours

Sailing Trips /Sailing School

Have a beautiful experience and cruise the amazing islands in Phang Nga Bay even by chinese junk (take a weekend or sunset trip). Yacht charters and sailing lessons are available mostly in Chalong in the south of Phuket.

Surfing

Surfing is not a major sporting pastime due to the lack of surf waves but at certain times of the year this s possible on the wst coast beaches such as Kata in the south and Kalim further north. You will find the hire of boards and equipment as well as instruction also at these locations

Water Ski/Cable Ski

The waters around Phuket are pefect for waterskiing in between November and April and operators located on the busier beaches offer trips as well as the usuall banana boat rides. Cable ski and Wakeboarding can be found on an artificial retangular lake inland near Patong.

Diving and Snorkelling

There are many operators offering diving courses for all the family (8 years up) as well as snorkeling tours in the islands surrounding Phuket

Yacht Charter

Chartering a yacht in Phuket is one of the most luxurious ways to experience the west coast of Thailand and the beautiful waters of the Andaman. The yacht charter option provides flexibility and comfort. A number of yachts are available for charter on the island.

Waterpark

Thrilling rides, exhiliarating slides, lazy river and a 6 level wave pool at the Splash Jungle Waterpark located at the Centara Grand West Sands Resort in the north west of Phuket provide fun for all the family.

Kiteboarding

Kitesurfing lessons and kitboarding trips are available from the beaches in the south of Phuket where there is low tides and shallow water on a sandy Bay. Kitesurfing Phuket is based on Friendship beach in Chalong Bay and has a fully equipped shop and reaturant and bar facilities.

Kayaking

Rent a kayak for a few hours or venture off for a day or so and explore the beautiful islands of Phuket individually. Recommended however are the Kayaking group trips offered including a guide to discover the beauty of the small islands and it's wildlife including monkeys, sea eagles and other birdlife.

Other Activities

Temple Visits

Visit The Big Buddha standing 45metres high looking over the south west and southern bays of Chalong, Rawai and Kata as well as the many temples throughout Phuket that are certainly worth a visit to experience.

Jungle Safari Tours

Khao Phra Thaeo National Park is a jungle region located 20km north of Phuket Town and is great for trekking. There is also a Gibbon rehabilitation project, and two waterfalls that are popular bathing and picnicking spots. A full day tour may take in canoeing and a visit to an elephant camp.

Golf

There are 8 golf courses on the island and can be challenging for the beginner or experienced golfer. The most well known is the Laguna Phuket Golf Course located in the north west and the Red Mountain Golf Club in the centre.

Go Kart and Off Road Fun

Safe for all the family and well worth a visit.

Shopping

Phuket has upmarket boutiques and antique stores situated in renovated Chinese shophouses, or Sino- Portuguese buildings. For western stile shopping visit the two mega malls on the island - Jungle Ceylon in Patong and Central Festival on the route to Phuket town.

Muay Thai Boxing

Thailand's Naional sport and a popular spectator sport which is now practiced all over the world. In the area of Patong there are nightly desplays of boxing accompanied with a frenzy of betting

Eating Out in Kalim

Kalim has an excellent selection of restaurants to enjoy brunch, fine dining, beachside sunsets and authentic Thai food or award winning international cuisine. Kalim is fast building a reputation for delectable cuisine. Here's a selection of a few that should be on your list to discover.

St Tropez Beach Club
This rooftop terrace is part of the Indochine resort, the beach club is centred around a swimming pool and has panoramic views. Chill out on the cabanas - its open into the evening and serves up a range of food including Asian and European and you can even enjoy drinks in the pool.

White Box
This elegant beachside restaurant has won its own share of awards and serves Italian and Thai specialities. It a great spot to soak up the views of Patong bay and enjoy a chilled glass of champagne or a sunset cocktail.

Acqua
The award winning Acqua restaurant serves up a taste explosion from Italian born chef Alessandro Frau, menu highlights include tuna and swordfish carpaccio and maine lobster a la rossini with truffle sauce.

Lims
This lovely restaurant is nestled deep in the hillside above Kalim bay serving modern Thai cuisine. Menu highlights include chicken marinated in honey, shrimp cookies and sea bass with lime or ginger.

Home Kitchen, Bar and Bed
The restaurant decor is eclectic, designed by Australian artist John Underwood. Food is created by chef Daniel Isberg and includes a special weekly 'chefs dinner' with a four course tasting menu. Drinks served by mixologist Thomas Alexandre - try the Autumn Martini.

Nightlife

Kalim Nightlife

Kalim nightlife is low key and centres around dining experiences and at many of the restaurants you are welcome to visit to enjoy a sundowner and stay for late night drinks. Patong is just a short distance away and easy to get to from Kalim. Check out the Patong nightlife section if you are looking for something more lively.

This bar and lounge is part of Lims restaurant and is a great place to chill with a cocktail.

Iguana beach bar
Twice a month there will be a special party on this beachfront bar which is a tiny 20 metre beach between Kalim and Kamala.
