Koh Samui or Phuket, Which Island for Your Villa Holiday

Two islands, two very different rhythms. Here is how to choose well.

It is the question we are asked more than any other, and after 20 years of arranging villa stays on both islands we can answer it honestly, because we win either way. The short version. Choose Phuket for November to April, direct international flights and an island with endless things to do. Choose Koh Samui for July and August sunshine, a smaller and slower island, and holidays where the villa itself is the destination.

Now the longer answer, because the right island really does depend on your dates, your group and the pace you want.

How do the two islands compare at a glance?

When is the best time to visit each island?

This is the deciding factor for most families, because the two islands sit on different coasts and follow different weather calendars.

Phuket faces the Andaman Sea, which is at its calm, glassy best from November to April. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings livelier surf and short, dramatic downpours, quieter beaches and noticeably better villa rates, with September and October the wettest stretch.

Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and runs on its own clock. Its driest, brightest weather stretches from January into April, and it stays largely sunny through the European summer. That last part matters more than anything else we can tell you. If you are travelling in July or August, when Phuket is in its green season, Samui is usually the sunnier island. Samui's own wet weeks arrive in October and November instead.

Christmas and New Year are glorious and busy on both, and the best villas are reserved up to a year ahead, so if that is your window, start early.

Which island has better beaches?

Different, rather than better. Phuket's west coast is one long ribbon of proper sandy beaches, Kamala and Bang Tao calm and family-friendly, Kata and Karon wide and social, and in the dry season the swimming is superb everywhere.

Samui's coastline is a necklace of individual bays, each with its own character. Maenam and Chaweng offer genuinely excellent all-day swimming, while the west and south coasts trade deep water for privacy, sunsets and sand flats that appear at low tide. Which is easier to get to?

Phuket, without question. Its international airport takes direct flights from across Europe, Australia, the Gulf and Asia, so you can be at the villa within an hour of landing. Reaching Samui usually means a short hop with Bangkok Airways from Bangkok, and the airline also flies to Samui direct from regional hubs including Singapore and Phuket, all arriving into one of the loveliest little open-air airports anywhere. Families with young children often find the Samui hop easier than they feared, but if flight simplicity is your priority, Phuket wins.

Which island suits your group?

Choose Phuket if you want big-island energy. Water parks, go-karts, old-town Sunday markets, surf lessons in the green season, championship golf and restaurants of every kind. Teenagers rarely announce they are bored in Phuket. It is also the natural pick for multi-generation groups arriving on different flights from different countries.

Choose Samui if the fantasy is slower. One island ring road, coconut groves running down to the sand, long villa mornings and boat days out. Groups who mostly want to be together around their own pool, with Fisherman's Village dinners and a massage sala on the deck, tend to fall for Samui and rebook it.

Baan Puri in Lipa Noi, 6 bedrooms sleeping up to 12, is Samui's quiet west coast at its best, a run of Thai-style beachfront pavilions set around a pool with a swim-up bar, an outdoor cinema, a kids' play area and kayaks on the sand, and glorious sunsets over the Five Islands.

Villa Lotus in Maenam, 6 bedrooms sleeping 12, sits on 39 metres of one of Samui's best swimming beaches, three pavilions arranged around a large L-shaped saltwater pool, with a games room, an outdoor massage pagoda and gentle water off the sand that suits younger children well.

Villa Malouna in Bang Por, 6 bedrooms sleeping 12 adults and 6 children, is the family answer, a 27-metre pool with a shallow children's area, a snorkelling reef offshore and a dedicated kids' dormitory that sleeps up to 8, complete with swings and a chalkboard wall.

Villas we would pick in Phuket

Twin Villas Natai on Natai Beach, the quiet 10km stretch just north of Phuket, is two independent 5-bedroom villas sharing one beachfront lawn, bookable together as a 10-bedroom estate sleeping up to 22. It is made for two families travelling together, one villa each with its own private chef and child-friendly saltwater pool, kayaks and bicycles included, and the airport just 20 to 30 minutes away.

Maya Anda above Surin, up to 11 bedrooms sleeping 22, is the choice when several families or a large group travel together, an elevated estate with panoramic sea views from every room and a short stroll down to Surin Beach.

Naam Sawan on Cape Yamu, 5 bedrooms sleeping 10 adults, shows Phuket's quiet side, a sheltered east-coast bay, a 30-metre pool with a shallow children's section, a home cinema and a tennis court.

Can you combine both islands in one trip?

You can, but we rarely recommend it. They sit on opposite coasts, so the transfer eats most of a day each way. Better pairings exist on each side. Samui combines beautifully with Koh Phangan, a short boat hop away and far quieter than its full-moon reputation suggests, while Phuket pairs naturally with the limestone scenery of Krabi. Two islands, one sea, no wasted day.

Which is better for families, Koh Samui or Phuket? Both are superb, so the honest answer is dates first. July and August favour Samui's sunshine, Christmas to Easter favours Phuket's glassy sea. Beyond weather, Phuket offers more attractions for restless teens, while Samui suits families who want calm bays and villa-centred days.

Which island is cheaper for a villa holiday? Like for like they are close, and both islands span everything from smart four-bedroom villas to grand estates. The bigger saving is seasonal. Phuket's green season, May to October, brings its best value, while Samui's quieter pricing sits in September to November.

Where should we go in July or August? Koh Samui. It stays largely sunny through the European summer holidays while Phuket is in its monsoon season. This is the single most useful fact in this article.

Where should we go in December or January? Phuket has the calmer, clearer sea at that time of year, though Samui's Christmas is lovely too. For either island, book peak weeks early, the best villas go up to a year ahead.

Is Koh Samui quieter than Phuket? Yes, as a whole. Samui is a smaller island with a slower rhythm, though Chaweng has plenty of nightlife when you want it. Phuket is larger and livelier, but quiet corners like Cape Yamu and Natai feel every bit as private as Samui.
